How to identify a gemstone from a picture
What a photograph carries, the order to read the clues in, how far a picture gets you, and the point where looking harder stops helping.

A photograph of a stone carries more evidence than most people expect and less than most people hope. It records appearance: body colour and how evenly that colour sits, whether light passes through, the shapes suspended inside, the geometry of the cut, the quality of the polish, the condition of the edges. It records nothing you would otherwise measure with an instrument. Every honest method of reading a stone from a picture follows from that one split, and the method below is the one the reading tool applies to every frame it is given.
What survives the trip from stone to picture
Six observations survive well: colour and its evenness, transparency, internal features large enough for the lens to resolve, cut style and the state of the facet junctions, surface luster, and chips or breaks at the edges. A seventh, scale, survives only if you put something of known size in the frame.
What does not survive is anything numeric. How strongly the stone bends light, how heavy it is for its size, how it behaves under polarised light or under a spectroscope: none of that is in a picture, and none of it can be inferred from one. That absence is why a careful reading ends with a short list rather than a name.
Read the clues in this order
The order matters, because each clue narrows the field the next one has to work in.
Body colour and how evenly it sits
Start with the colour of the stone itself, not the colour of the highlights. Then ask whether it is even. Colour that shifts in straight-edged zones, or runs in parallel bands, is a different piece of evidence from colour that sits uniformly from edge to edge, and it narrows the field more sharply. Colour in a photograph is also the clue most easily corrupted: a warm lamp, a coloured tabletop, a metal setting reflecting into the stone, or a phone’s automatic white balance can all shift it.
Transparency
Can the background be read through the stone, is it cloudy, or does no light pass at all? Hold this apart from colour. A dark stone can be fully transparent and a pale one can be opaque. Backlighting is the only reliable way to judge it, which is one of the reasons a photograph lit from behind is worth taking.
Internal features
This is the most useful clue a picture can hold. Straight needles, feathery veils, clouds, and bands of colour inside the body are features that grew with the host material, and they point at crystalline families. Rounded voids and smooth curved swirls point instead at something moulded. The difference between angular and rounded is often visible at ordinary phone magnification, and it is the difference the stone or glass indicators turn on.
Cut style and facet junctions
Look at where two faces meet. A crisp line is one observation, a soft rounded band is another. Symmetry, the presence of a table, the proportion of crown to pavilion: all of it is readable face up and much more readable in profile.
Surface luster
Luster is the character of the reflection rather than its brightness. Bright and glassy, soft and slightly waxy, oily, or dull are distinguishable in a photograph if the light is even and the surface has been wiped clean.
Chips, abrasions and break surfaces
Where an edge is already chipped, the shape of the break is evidence. A curved shell-like surface reads differently from a flat step. Never make a new one in order to look at it: nothing a break surface could add justifies damaging the stone.
How far this actually gets you
Far enough to name a family and rank a short list, and no further. That is why a careful report says “quartz family, amethyst-type purple” and not the name of a species, and why each candidate arrives with a confidence score and the single observation that would most change it. Families and look-alike groups are the honest unit of a visual reading. Stones that sit in different families can look identical face up in a picture, and the things that separate them are measurements.
If the stone is set in jewelry, expect less. A setting removes the girdle outline, the pavilion, the depth of the stone and often the true body colour from evidence, and any reading that does not lower its own certainty to match is overreaching.
When to stop looking and take it further
Stop when two candidates both fit everything visible. At that point more staring at the same frame produces confidence but no new evidence. Three things move the reading instead:
- A second photograph from a different angle, especially a profile that shows the girdle line and the depth.
- A look through a 10x loupe, in daylight and then under a single lamp, noting whether internal features are angular or rounded.
- An appointment with a qualified gemmologist, who can take the readings that settle what the list cannot.
A photograph is a good first pass and a poor last word. Read the clues in order, accept a family rather than a name, and let the instruments do the part they are for.
